Read all content & the tournament information sheet below before your arrival.
Don't forget to submit an Independent Contractor Agreement to the site director when you arrive onsite.
Tournament Procedures: Click on the blue button below to read the general tournament info posted by the event as well as the additional content below. A pre-tournament video is posted to the right and is required viewing prior to the tournament.
If you already watched the video, please re-watch the updates from 5/26 found between 2:17-4:25.
WE ARE NOT SENDING OUR NORMAL GRID OF MATCHES FOR THIS EVENT. ALL MATCHES ARE ASSIGNED IN TM2 AND CAN BE FOUND USING YOUR LOGIN. WATCH THE VIDEO FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
Patches: This is a JVA-sanctioned event. Patches should not be worn.
YOU ARE PROFESSIONALS: WE EXPECT THAT YOU WILL BE ON TIME AND CONDUCT YOURSELVES IN A PLEASANT MANNER TO ALL MATCH PARTICIPANTS & SITE DIRECTORS.
Arrival Time: Ensure you are at the playing site 30 minutes before your scheduled match start time. If your first match is in the middle of the wave, you'll want to arrive 40 minutes prior in case your court is running ahead. Do not leave your court until your replacement has arrived. This may require you to start their warmups. The first match of each wave will start on time. Courts may accelerate up to 15 minutes ahead of the listed start time. So if your 8:00AM match ended at 8:30AM and both playing teams and the assigned ref team all agree to start early, your 10-minute warmups for the 9:00AM match can start at 8:35AM and you may begin play at 8:45AM. DO NOT ACCELERATE FASTER THAN THAT OR WE WILL RUN INTO ISSUES!
Exception: The last match of each wave and all matches on Monday may start when all teams and officials are ready.
$30 per standard match (best 2 sets of 3), $45 for a mandatory 3 sets to 25 match, $15 for single, tie-breaker sets.
You will be paid directly by Northern Lights - NOT Metro
OFFICIALS SHOULD WRITE THEIR NAME LEGIBLY ON EACH SCORE SHEET SO NORTHERN LIGHTS CAN VERIFY PAYROLL.
At your first Northern Lights-paid assignment each year, you will need to fill out an independent contractor agreement for Northern Lights because they are paying you. Contracts will be available onsite OR you can print one out ahead of time to give to the site director upon your arrival to your first match.
All persons attending this event are bound by the Northern Lights liability wavier. There is no need to sign this waiver; your attendance at this event is your agreement to the terms in this waiver. Please review it prior to your assignment.
Official's Uniform: See our General Uniform Guidelines and plan on the following shirt colors for this tournament:
Saturday = Blue Certified Polo
Sunday = White Certified Polo
Monday = Blue Certified Polo
Coin Toss: Conduct a socially-distanced coin toss with 1 representative from each team to determine warm-up and serve order.
Warm-up: For all matches of the pool, the warm-up time will be 2-4-4. (2 minutes shared, 4 minutes serving team, 4 minutes receiving team). Teams are not allowed to ball handle, pepper, etc. while the other team has exclusive use of the court.
Each scoresheet will have a "BEST OF 3" or "MANDATORY 3 SETS" depending on the pool format.
Initial plans for Saturday & Sunday to be 2 waves of 4 team pools starting at 8AM & 3PM. Monday will be playoffs with approximately 7-8 matches/court.
Each match is best 2 out of 3 sets, the first two sets will be played to 25 points, win by 2, no cap. The third set of a match will be to 15 points, win by 2, no cap. Teams will NOT be asked to switch sides at any time during the match.
BOYS 18 MATCH FORMAT: Those of you that work the regular season for MN Boys know that they use MSHSL rules, have adjusted ball handling guidelines and they use a modified scoresheet. All of these modifications will be in effect for the boys matches played this tournament as well including the scoresheet. See the "Rules Set - Rule Modifications" section on our Boys High School page.
Before you arrive on court, ensure you have the following link ready to go on your phone to report scores electronically.
NOTE: Those of you at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse that do not have the ability to enter scores via your phone, may politely ask the site director to assist you with your score entry. Please consult with the MVW site director when you arrive so they are aware of your request for assistance. ALL OTHER LOCATIONS MUST ENTER SCORES USING THE PROCEDURE ABOVE.
Certified R1s will be assigned. Work teams will be assigned to each match to provide line judges, and scorers as well as an adult, rostered coach to be the R2. In lieu of a rostered coach being the R2, a team may supply a USAV registered, non-playing Regional+ Certified Official to fulfill this position. In a 5 team pool where a team must officiate two courts, it is acceptable for one of the two courts to utilize a player R2 ONLY if the officiating team does not have 2 rostered coaches in attendance.
LET'S FORGO LINE JUDGE FLAGS FOR THIS EVENT SO WE DON'T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT PROPER SANITIZING PROCEDURES BETWEEN USES.
Rule Set & Modifications
USAV rules apply.
At the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse, the divider curtains between courts and the beam supporting those curtains are out of bounds. The remainder of the ceiling is in bounds per USAV rules.
Normal adjacent court rules apply. Players may not enter the court next to them before, during or after playing the ball.
Officials accepting assignments should be flexible and understanding of changes due to unforeseen circumstances caused by the pandemic.
An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death.
By participating in a Northern Lights event, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19.
On May 20, the State of Minnesota updated the Youth Sports Guidance webpage to be in line with the MN Department of Health and CDC face mask covering policy. The updated guidance has removed the requirements for players and spectators to wear a mask at practices or competitions. Therefore, at this event, masks are optional for those fully vaccinated and strongly recommended for those that are not fully vaccinated.
The following guidelines apply to officials working this event:
Officials that are fully vaccinated (2 weeks since 2nd shot for Pfizer/Moderna OR 2 weeks since single J&J shot) may optionally remove their mask when they are on the R1 stand IF they are using an electronic whistle.
Officials using a regular whistle will still wear a properly fitted mask that covers their mouth, nose, and whistle at all times to reduce the potential of droplets.
Masks should still be worn by officials that are not fully vaccinated at all times.
Masks should still be worn by ALL officials when not on the R1 stand when 6 feet of physical distancing from other persons cannot be consistently maintained.
Frequent use of hand sanitizer is asked of everyone present.
Officials are not responsible for monitoring the mask wearing, vaccination status, and/or physical distancing of others. Coaches are responsible for providing direction to their athletes regarding distancing and other safety protocols. Site Directors are responsible for enforcement of event guidelines for teams and spectators.
Water fountains will be turned off; bottle fillers remain on.
There is a room marked and available for officials in the playing facility area. Please keep it tidy during the day and clean-up at the end of play.
Concessions will not be available onsite, but outside food will be allowed for officials. Please be discreet when bringing in and consuming outside food within the building.
Northern Lights asks that any individual (player, coach, official, etc.) not attend Power League if they have experienced a positive COVID-19 test in the past 14 days and/or are actively showing symptoms of COVID-19. They ask the same if there has been a known exposure to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 and/or is actively showing symptoms.
Any other precautions as noted in the full COVID-19 plan linked in the prior section. If there are changes to these rules they will be posted above.
