Facility & Parking Information
When entering, please be sure to identify yourself as an official to those taking admission. There is a room on the upper level across from Court 3 that is marked and available for officials. Officials should NOT be in the coaches room on the lower level. Please keep the room tidy during the day and clean-up your space before you leave. No outside food or beverage is allowed at this site, so please be discreet with the items you bring to the officials room.
No need to adjust net heights, the MVW staff takes care of this. The ref stands are NOT adjustable from their current/fixed position.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Payment/NL Contractor Agreement:
$30 per standard match (best 2 sets of 3), $43 for a mandatory 3 sets to 25 match. You will be paid directly by Northern Lights - NOT Metro
At your first Northern Lights assignment, you will need to fill out the independent contractor agreement for Northern Lights because they are paying you. Contracts will be given to you by the site director.
Arrival Time:
Ensure you are in the building 30 minutes prior to your first match and court-side 15 minutes prior to the start of your match.
If you are arriving mid-wave, your court may be running ahead of schedule. Check on your court upon arrival.
Site Management:
Northern Lights Power League is run by the host club and they will keep the courts running on time.
Officials are expected to treat site managers with respect and politely consult with them if there is a court issue.
Concessions will be available at the venue.
Officials will be allowed to discreetly bring in personal coolers/lunch boxes.
The facility has bottle fillers. Please come prepared with any food/water you need.
Select and measure a game ball from the cart of warm-up balls on your court.
Rule Set & Modifications
USAV rules apply.
Libero Jerseys: All will be acceptable with the only exception of an identical uniform to her teammates.
At the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse, the divider curtains between courts and the beam supporting those curtains are out of bounds. The remainder of the ceiling is in bounds per USAV rules.
Normal adjacent court rules apply. Players may not enter the blue part of the court next to them before, during or after playing the ball.
Special Rules for 12U Power League Matches
Net will be approximately 7'
A serving line will be placed on the court 7 meters from the net. Players may not cross that line when serving
Volley-Lite balls will be used
If a team scores 3 points in a row with the same server, then that team shall retain possession of the ball, but they must rotate and have a new server
Officials are asked by the league to be very, very lenient on their calls for the 12U league. Only obvious caught/thrown balls, and net violations should be called.
Match Format - Northern Lights Power League Weekends:
Each match is best 2 out of 3 sets, the first two sets will be played to 25 points, win by 2, no cap.
If the match is split 1-1, play a full third set to 15 points, win by 2, no cap, no time limit.

Teams will NOT be asked to switch sides at any time during the match.
RULES FOR NON-DECIDING THIRD SETS
If the match has been decided in two sets (i.e. Team A wins 2-0) AND there are 10 minutes or more remaining before the next scheduled match time, a non-deciding third set WILL be played:
Signal from the ref stand to the scoreboard operator how many minutes to put on the clock so that it runs out on the hour OR the 1⁄2 hour (the next scheduled match time).
There is no lineup. There is no coin flip. There is no side change. The Serving team is the team that served in set 1.
The officiating crew still officiates. The running score is kept, but no scoresheet. Score of third set is NOT entered into results.
Set is played until time runs out or 15 points. Then immediately start the 10 minute warmup for next match.
Example 1: Team A wins the 8:00AM match 2-0. The next match is scheduled for 9:00AM and the current time is 8:48AM. The R1 asks the scoreboard operator to set the clock for 12 minutes and the non-deciding 3rd set starts immediately. The set will end when the timer runs out OR a team reaches 15 points.
Example 2: The 9:00AM match ran long, finishing at 10:12AM. The 10:00AM match teams warm up and play, Team A wins the match 2-0 and the time is 10:58AM. Match is over, no 3rd set is played. Immediately start the 10 minute warmup for the 11:00AM match.
Example 3: The 11:00AM match finishes early with Team A winning 2-0 it is 11:30AM. The R1 asks the scoreboard operator to set the clock for 30 minutes and the non-deciding 3rd set to 15 starts immediately. Team A wins the 3rd set and the time is 11:45AM. The match is over. Immediately start the 10 minute warmup for the 12:00PM match.
Match Format for 12's Cup Tournament Weekend:
For the 12's Cup Tournament, the match format is best 2 sets out of 3, only play the 3rd set, if needed.
The Rules for Non-Deciding Third Sets format used in the NL Power League DO NOT APPLY to the 12's Cup Weekend.
Coin Toss:
A team representative(s) from each team and the R1 will conduct a coin toss.
Assign 'heads' to one side and 'tails' to the other when performing the coin toss. The winner of the coin toss will choose serve, side or receive.
If a 3rd set is necessary, the a team representative(s) will meet with the R1 at center court for a coin toss, the winner will choose serve or receive.
Teams will NOT switch sides during the match.
Warm-up:
Standard 2-4-4 warm-up where Team A will have the first 4 minutes and Team B will have the last 4 minutes.
Teams are not allowed to ball handle, pepper, etc. while the other team has exclusive use of the court.
Officiating Crew:
R1s will be assigned by MVOA
Teams will provide the remaining crew members (Adult R2, Line Judges, Score table staff).
OFFICIALS SHOULD WRITE THEIR NAME LEGIBLY ON EACH SCORE SHEET SO NORTHERN LIGHTS CAN VERIFY PAYROLL.
ASSIGNMENTS
Selected officials will be offered assignments through ArbiterSports. You may check the status of assignment by reviewing your SCHEDULE tab in Arbiter.
Actual court assignments are sent via email usually the Tuesday prior to the event. Please confirm with a reply to that email indicating you are "Good to Go" after reviewing your schedule. Final schedules are sent via email the Friday before the event.
